Pianist Violin-Ella Philip was a graduate of the Budapest Academy of Music and the École Normale de Musique in Paris. The chance to be studied with the famous pianist Alfred Cortot manifested itself both in the quality of her performances as a soloist or as a member of the “Cuteanu” Quartet, as well as in the didactic activity within the Art Institute or the Music School from Timişoara. She was well known to the inter- and post-war Timişoara music world. As a teacher, Ella Philip left behind a real school, whose existence is manifested by the dozens of pianists she trained. Among her students are Paul Dan and Andrei Deleanu, the latter becoming a concert soloist of the Constanța Philharmonic, then a professor at the National University of Music in Bucharest.
Pianist Felicia Maria Stancovici, university professor and, between 2000 and 2008, dean of the Faculty of Music of the West University of Timişoara, initiated the International Piano Competition "Ella Philipp", which took place in 2006, 2008 and 2011 as a tribute to teacher Ella Philipp, whose name is linked to the professional destiny of many piano performers and pedagogues”. An ambitious and large-scale organizational project, the International Competition is the first concert competition for piano and orchestra in the country, a competition whose registration regulations require three full concerts, from different creative eras. The continuity of this ambitious undertaking should be ensured in the future.
Ella Philip lived on Mihai Eminescu Boulevard no. 3 in Timisoara. Her daughter Judith (1931, Timisoara-1997, Israel), married Jeger, was a piano teacher in Cluj, then at the Petah-Tikva Conservatory, Israel.
