On the eve of the Sabbath and every holiday, candles are lit. Most Jewish families have two special candlesticks for this occasion, which are inherited from one generation to another.
According to tradition, the mistress of the house or, in her absence, the master of the house, lights two candles, then makes three times a gesture of envelopment over the flames, covers his eyes and says the traditional blessing, followed by a personal prayer or reflection. Candles should be lit before the official start of the Sabbath, 18-30 minutes before sunset.
Prayer for lighting candles on Sabbath:
Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh haolam asher kidshanu bemitzvotav v’tzivanu lehadlik ner shel Shabbat!
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, Who sanctified us with his commandments and commanded us to kindle the Sabbath candles!
